A Smart Solution...

Although it is a Saturday, I will add a comment or two. It is raining and a bit cool outside, so tennis and golf are out of the question for today.

While not everyone has the need to carry around a portable PC, most would agree that the desire to be in touch with others is a reasonable one. And the ability to make an occasional note or two has its advantages.

Enter the 'Smartphone'...a combination PDA and cell phone. (While I don't want to endorse a carrier or brand here, contact me and I will gladly provide the details and sourcing info). I use a smartphone with a digital PCS provider, and synchronize it with my desktop and portable PCs. I maintain multiple databases of clients, friends, family, et cetera, but only keep a limited number on the smartphone, in order to speed up searches. A few clicks on my PC allows me to avoid duplicate data entry on each device.

Not too long ago, I carried a pocket calendar and ink pen, and would make notes during the day, and then write those same entries onto my desk calendar, or type them into the contact manager on my PC. When I upgraded to a Palm/Handspring device, I was able to sync the notes with my PC, but I still carried a separate cell phone. The smartphone combined all of these functions into one, and in a relatively easy to use package.

Another benefit...

There are some nice features included in my smartphone which I find useful and beneficial.
- A voice dialer...mention a pre-programed name, and it dials the number;
- A digital voice recorder built in...handy for making quick comments while driving (or secretly recording that conversation at lunch);
- Speed dial and direct dial from your contact manager's phone list;
- A built-in speakerphone, which works great in the office, but I still suggest using an earbud mike in the car;
- The usual Palm/Handspring OS features - address book, calendar, calculator, memo pad, to do list, city time, etc.
- A built-in 14.4k fax;
- A web browser and Eudora Mail;
- An IR beam for transferring data between devices.

As you can see, the list is extensive, and with the available Palm applications, you can tailor the device to your own requirements. My device uses a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery that supplies power for the phone and the PDA, so no need to buy alkalines or separate rechargeables.

All in all, a pretty smart solution for almost anyone.

Just got a phone call for tennis at an indoor court...'til next time...
