Still Learning
Surprised by your ability to learn new things? You shouldn't be...
How many new words have you learned during the past month...let's see. Najaf...Al Jazeera...Kirkuk...Mosul...M.O.A.B....embedded...Shi'ite...SARS...to name a few. Have your daily conversations been altered to include some of these words around the water cooler?
You should be proud of yourself. It goes to prove that you are never too old to learn new things.
Within recent years, you probably added a few other words to your already extensive vocabulary...words and phrases such as 'hanging chad', 'infrastructure', or during the Internet boom the oft-used phrase 'paradigm shift' and 'spam' were introduced. Even 'blog' is a relatively new term in the English language.
Some phrases and words get overused. Take for example, 'user-friendly'. Other words never gain 100 percent acceptance...A business card handed to me listed the firm's 'telecopier' number (instead of their 'fax' number). Don't be too concerned if you forget and allow one of these words or phrases to slip out. You're not alone.
Within the next few weeks and months, you will be re-introduced to some new words while learning other words...ones such as Damascus, Tehran, or Pyongyang. Keep your foreign dictionaries nearby.
