Vonage reported that more than 100,000 subscribers have signed up for its VoIP service, making it the first provider to achieve that mark. The company said it has doubled its subscriber base in less than five months.

Jeffrey Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage, said the company is adding more than 4,000 lines a week. In a statement, the company said: "Over the life of the service more than 130 million calls have been completed across its network and call volume continues to grow at an exponential rate."

The rush to VoIP has exploded in recent months with the regional phone companies--BellSouth, Qwest, SBC Communications, and Verizon Communications--all announcing plans to enter the consumer market. AT&T also has recently announced it will roll out Web phoning for consumers this quarter. Many of those large firms have been offering VoIP for business users for several months.
