If Your Software Is So Great, Why Do You Need All of These Corrections (Upgrades) ?

After twenty years of seeing groundbreaking products in the PC industry, I have become accustomed to one request for upgrade after another. Okay, sure, these firms need the money more than I do. But give us all a break. It would seem a little more reasonable to the end-user if a 99-cent upgrade was offered 90 days after the original release along with a line that states, "Ooops, we meant to include this little feature in our latest release."

Bad enough that Windows OS and IE have buggy software, but when companies such as Best Software (publisher of ACT ! and Saleslogix), Roxio (EasyCD), and Quicken start pushing upgrades on my way out of the door of CompUSA, something has got to give. They have plenty of company in this attempt to get recurring revenue from existing customers.

As CIOs and MIS Directors started to see budget cutbacks or freezes, many vendors have attempted to mine the B2C sector. Some of these firms are as bad as the worst spammers, with e-mails hitting my and your inbox almost daily. But here's the kicker: I have had people tell me that they are still using the early versions of Quicken on their 286 or 386 machines...you know, the one they bought ten PCs ago. (I guess that I should have included Intel and AMD in that earlier list.)
