During the first quarter of fiscal 2005, a large Atlanta-based home improvement and building supplies retailer reported $43 million in income related to 'gift card breakage'.

'Gift card breakage' is the term used for prepaid gift cards that are not fully redeemed by consumers, and for which "the likelihood of redemption by the customer is remote"...according to their SEC filing.
