Tennis - Has It Become Too Loud?
--
Watching tennis, live or on television, has become irritating to the ears. Witness the Wimbledon broadcasts this week, and depending on the match, one might want to turn off the volume and turn on the closed captioning. And the grunting and moaning has become contagious, ever since Monica Seles became the most obnoxious-sounding female player on the tour.
--
Today, Maria Sharapova, along with Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Mary Pierce, and others make the same nauseating sounds while playing. While USTA rules allow opponents to lodge a complaint with the chair umpire if the sounds are too distracting, no one has stepped forward to make the rule permanent or to enforce the penalties on the professional circuit.
