Patriot Act Compromise Not Enough

The compromise agreement in the Senate over the so-called 'Patriot Act' does not go far enough to protect American civil liberties. Several Democrat Senators who have agreed to the compromise cite it as a step in the right direction, but the fact that the deal would be a four-year extension should be enough to concern most Americans.

One of the items being questioned concerns gag orders by the court system regarding National Security Letters, a type of secret subpoena (Section 215) used by the government to obtain library records and other information on average citizens. No connection between the suspects and alledged terrorists is required to get the subpoena from the FISA court.
