FCC Sends Letter to Verizon and BellSouth Over New Fees
--
The Federal Communications Commission is sending a 'Letter of Inquiry' to both Verizon and BellSouth over fees being charged to customers, coincidentally at the same time that USF fees are being phased out. The Verizon fees, discussed in a previous post, is a few cents less than the $2.97 per month USF fee, but BellSouth is continuing to bill the same amount as a DSL surcharge.
--
With approximately 20 million subscribers, BellSouth will be generating nearly $60 million per month of operating revenue with no additional incurred costs. BellSouth, which is being acquired by AT&T, needs FCC approval for the transaction to close with AT&T.
--
So much for deregulation and the Telecommunications Act.
